A Conversation with Engineer Lisa Laws
Structural engineer Lisa Laws (who works at the engineering firm URS) has lent her infectious enthusiasm to Project Exploration for several years now, making regular appearances at Sisters4Science sessions. Earlier this year she participated in a Science Digest session devoted to engineering, and joined our annual Outdoor Leadership Retreat – showing students the basics of designing bridges and buildings, and encouraging them to follow their passion. “She’s a woman, I’m a woman. She likes science, I like science. That’s it.” — A Conversation with Dr. Kim Coble and K’Maja
Dr. Kim Coble and high school sophomore K’Maja epitomize the kind of multi-faceted, long-term relationship that Project Exploration seeks to foster. United by their love of astronomy, their partnership has grown into a genuine friendship that continues to enrich both of their lives. Senior Manager of Curriculum and Professional Learning Communities Jameela Jafri (who introduced them) and I sat down with the two of them at a local café to find out more about them. Boys at Emmett Till Math and Science Academy Take on Science After School with Project Exploration
Brothers4Science is a year-round after-school program that combines science exploration with leadership development for approximately 50 minority middle school boys. Currently the program is run in partnership with three schools across Chicago— Ariel Community Academy, Mollison Elementary School, and Emmett Till Elementary.
It’s amazing to see how much the boys of Brothers4Science (B4S) at Till Math and Science Academy have become more comfortable with science concepts—and even more comfortable with each other—since we first began in February. In the past weeks of B4S, the group has had struggles and successes, frustrations and breakthroughs, and a lot of fun learning. Not a session goes by that’s not filled with the students’ laughter. Directing their abundant energy toward engaged learning has been our main task, and has manifested in a lot of different ways.
We’ve really tried to focus on journaling at Till, writing journal entries once per session. At first, the boys were very reluctant to express themselves in their journals, perhaps partly due to their notion of writing as a non-masculine activity. Breaking this stereotype has been a constant goal as we continue to focus on journals, since one of the aims of the program is to improve not just the boys’ science skills, but their communication skills as well. President Clinton, STEM, and America on the Horizon
YES! This is a picture of President Bill Clinton and me at the Chicago Club last night. True, I am not exactly standing next to him, but boy was it exciting anyways!
On April 23rd, 2012, I had a chance to be part of a reception hosted by President Clinton as he gathers momentum for the upcoming Clinton Global Initiative America gathering, which will take place here in Chicago on June 7th and 8th. Continue reading
MOTOrama: IGERT bioengineering students lead outreach activities!
On Friday, April 6, four amazing bioengineering students from the University of Chicago and Northwestern University led students through day-long activities about sensation and motor control. The program, called MOTOrama, was the culminating outreach activity for the four IGERT students.
IGERT (Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship) is the National Science Foundation’s flagship program to train graduate students, scientists, and engineers in interdisciplinary work. As part of their work, IGERT students learn to communicate their knowledge effectively to the public and engage in outreach activities to share their work.… Continue reading
Brothers4Science Brings Hands-on Science Education to Young Men of Color in Chicago Public Schools
Brothers4Science is a new youth science program that Project Exploration launched in February 2012. As with its counterpart, Sisters4Science, the Brothers program seeks to provide hands-on science education to a demographic that is vastly under-represented in the field of science: young men of color. This post chronicles the Brothers4Science program at Mollison Elementary School. Keep posted for blog posts from our other programs at Ariel Elementary and Till Math and Science Academy. Enjoy! -Khari
The Brothers4Science program has been going on for several weeks now at Mollison Elementary, and… Continue reading
Welcome to my Dino World: Science Digest 2012
On Monday, February 13, 2012, I went to Science Digest 2012 to learn about research in medicine. While there I met other teens; Olivia, Dejanae, Ariel and Erica. We came to the event to learn more about careers in medicine. The guests speakers were Dr. Tracey Powell, Ms. Patrice Wagner and Ms. Barb McKittrick. Dr. Tracey Powell has a private practice and is on staff at Hargrove Hospital. Ms. Patrice Wagner is both a police officer and works under health sciences, giving her… Continue reading
Girls’ Health and Science Day 2012 – A Conversation with Katie Cahnmann
As always, this year’s Girls’ Health and Science Day included an Adult Track, a chance for teachers and other adults to do what the girls do: share their experience, encounter new ideas, and reflect on the experience of being a girl in today’s world. I caught up with 5-year GHSD veteran Katie Cahnmann to get her take on this year’s event.
Elsa Rodriguez: Tell us a little bit about yourself. What is your job? What has been your experience working with youth around issues of health and wellness?
Katie… Continue reading
